Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort is amongst one of the largest forts in the world and was built in 1156 by Rao Jaisal from whom the place got its name. The fort itself is perched on a hill and is set on the vast stretches of the desert. Its massive walls are made of yellow sandstone which gives the appearance of tawny lion color during the day and which turns to honey-gold with the setting sun. It is precisely for this reason that Jaisalmer Fort is also popular as ‘Golden Fort’. The locals call it ‘Sonar Quila’. Set in the center of Jaisalmer, the fort is amongst one of the most beautiful monuments in the region.

The fort itself has three layers of walls, the front layers of which is made of solid stone blocks reinforcing loose rubble of Trikuta Hill. The second layer of wall surrounds the fort in a serpentine manner whereas from the third wall soldiers used to hurl boiling water, oil and massive stones to thwart any attempt of the enemy to enter the fort by climbing on the wall.

Though Jaisalmer Fort has today lost its glory yet it commands a special place and is a prominent feature of Rajasthan. Its value can be gauged from the fact that no visit to Jaisalmer is considered to be complete without a customary visit to the fort.

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India’s desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
